Syllabus

Course Objectives

  1. Disciplinary goals: The course aims to develop the skills of comprehension, reworking and translation of standard Arabic texts of medium and high difficulty. The course also aims to enhance knowledge of specialized languages and registers used in international and intercultural communication and cooperation, with special attention to the vocabulary, expressions and structures of media language. At the end of this module, a student will have: improved his/her knowledge of advanced Arabic grammar; acquired detailed knowledge and understanding of a wide range of Arabic vocabulary; improved her/his knowledge and understanding of a wide range of Arabic structures and expressions; acquired specialized translation skills from Arabic to Italian.
  2. Instrumental Goals: The language learning activities (AAL) enhance the skills of oral exposition and expression and translation from Italian to Arabic as well as written expression in Arabic. Therefore, attendance at these activities (AAL) is highly recommended although not mandatory.



Course Prerequisites

Year 1 students: Arabic language skills equal to CEFR level B1.

Year 2 students: Arabic language skills equal to CEFR level B2.

Propedeuticity: for 2nd year students, passing the LM Arabic Language I exam is mandatory to be eligible for the LM Arabic Language II exam.



Teaching Methods

Weekly seminars. Lectures, exercises in class, Moodle e-learning platform. Language learning activities (AAL) are provided to accompany the teaching content and an Arabic Language Seminar (36 hours) dedicated to 2nd year students.


Assessment Methods

Students of Arabic Language LM I - Linguistics and Translation (12 CFU):

Composite activities (12 CFU): one exam for both modules A + B from the summer session consisting of:

Written test including: 1. translation of a text in Modern Standard Arabic into Italian; 2. comprehension exercises related to a written text in Modern Standard Arabic; 3. translation from Italian to Arabic. The use of a dictionary is permitted. The test covers topics covered in the official courses (MOD. A and B) and in the AALs of “Propaedeutics to Translation and Written Expression.” The overall grade of the test is expressed in 30/30.

Oral test including: 1. reading, comprehension and analysis of unvoiced Arabic texts; 2. theoretical questions on morpho-syntactic, lexical and phraseological aspects; 3. interview in Arabic during which students will have to demonstrate their ability to express themselves correctly on the topics covered in the official courses (MOD. A and B) and in the AALs of “Oral Expression and Exposition.” The overall grade is expressed in 30/30.

The final grade is calculated as the average of the written test and the oral test scores.

Students of Arabic Language LM II - Linguistics and Translation (12 CFU)

Written test including: 1. translation of a text in Modern Standard Arabic into Italian; 2. comprehension exercises related to a written text in Modern Standard Arabic; 3. translation from Italian to Arabic. The use of the dictionary (Arabic-Itaian) is permitted. The test is based on topics addressed in the official courses, in the AAL of “Specialist Italian-Arabic Translation” and the Arabic Language Seminar. The overall grade of the test is expressed in 30/30.

Oral test including: 1. a part of reading, comprehension and analysis of a text in unvoiced Modern Standard Arabic; 2. some theoretical language questions on morphological, grammatical, syntactic and lexical topics. These first two parts are related to the topics covered in the official MOD II A course. 3. two interviews in Arabic on the topics addressed in the AAL of "Oral Exposition. Propaedeutics to Audiovisual Subtitling“ and ”Propaedeutics to Mediation and Interpretation."The overall grade for the test is given in 30/30.

For second-year students, the assessment also includes the outcomes of the activities carried out in the Seminar of Arabic Language.

For 1st and 2nd year students

The written test is preparatory to the oral test. The final grade is given by the written and oral test.

To be eligible for the LM Arabic Language II exam, students must have passed the LM Arabic Language I exam.

The evaluation will take into account the level of acquisition of the knowledge and skills provided by the course, in particular linguistic correctness (lexical, morphosyntactic, pragmatic and phonological), terminological accuracy, appropriateness concerning the required task and mastery of the tools of linguistic analysis and reflection.

The evaluations are expressed in 30/30 according to the following ranges:

Excellent (30 cum laude) - Knowledge and skills fully acquired and applied with accuracy, effectiveness and autonomy. No errors.

Very Good (30-27) - Very sound knowledge and skills, applied correctly and with confidence. Minor and non-recurring errors, if any.

Good (26-24) - Adequate knowledge and skills, with some uncertainty or inaccuracy.Errors present but not serious or systematic.

Sufficient (23-18) - Basic knowledge and skills acquired but applied partially or with obvious errors. Sufficient general understanding.

Insufficient (less than 18) - Insufficient knowledge and skills not adequately developed.Numerous errors that compromise the success of the task.



Contents

  1. Disciplinary contents: Arabic-Italian translation activities of standard modern Arabic texts of various types: texts from websites-web sites of international organizations, from the Arabic press and magazines, with special attention to the specificity of media language and the influence of European languages on the structures of Arabic. Textual analysis and translation activities will be accompanied by in-depth lexical, grammatical and syntactic investigations. Guided listening activities will be carried out. For 2nd-year students there is a 36-hour Arabic Language Seminar that is part of the official course.
  2. The course syllabus is the same for attending and non-attending students.

Students are strongly encouraged to participate in the course lectures and language learning activities (AAL), differentiated for first and second years. 

During language learning activities, students will practice translation, work on oral and written texts, and carry out listening, reading, comprehension and production activities, both written and oral in Arabic. 

It is recommended that 1st year students take AAL LM 1: Oral Exposition and Expression; Propaedeutics to Translation (Italian-Arabic) and Written Expression.

It is recommended that 2nd year students take AAL LM 2: Propaedeutics to Mediation and Consecutive Interpretation; Propaedeutics to Specialized Translation (Italian-Arabic); Exposition and Oral Expression; Propaedeutics to Audiovisual Subtitling.

Year 2 students are also reminded that the Seminar of Arabic Language is an integral part of their program.

All of the activities listed above are part of the course and will contribute to the development of the knowledge and skills mentioned in the syllabus; students are encouraged to actively participate in the lectures and activities assigned. Registration in the Moodle e-learning platform is mandatory to take the exam.
