Course Objectives

The course aims to provide a solid cultural foundation and a set of fundamental theoretical and analytical tools for understanding the main socio-economic aspects of the contemporary world. The objective is to introduce an introductory conceptual system for critically addressing key issues related to the functioning of modern economic systems. Particular emphasis is placed on the importance of adopting a critical approach in the analysis of economic and social phenomena, as well as on the methodological need for simple but rigorous analytical tools to interpret reality. The course is divided into two parts. The first, theoretical part provides the fundamental concepts of the main economic theories, considered essential for understanding the dynamics of the contemporary economy. The second part, on the other hand, is dedicated to the application of these theoretical tools to the study of the main current issues. The ultimate goal of the course is to acquire a comprehensive and critically grounded understanding of economic reality, enabling students to develop independent and informed analytical skills. The course also aims to promote the development of communication and language skills, through active and informed participation in classroom discussions. These skills are complemented by the opportunity to strengthen one's interdisciplinary learning abilities, with a view to studying other related disciplines.

Teaching Methods

Teaching takes place through lectures, with particular attention to discussion and direct dialogue with students, who will be able to make suggestions for further study or debate.

Assessment Methods

The assessment consists of a 90-minute written test divided into two parts:

  • Part I: 15 closed-ended questions (not multiple choice) that do not require a detailed answer, but rather a brief response (generally definitions of basic concepts and/or formulas). These questions are worth a maximum of 2 points.
  • Part II: one open-ended question, assessed according to the knowledge expressed, the relevance of the answer to the question, the ability to summarise, and the appropriateness of language. This question is assessed out of 30 points.

The final result is a weighted average of the two parts: 1/3 (part I) + 2/3 (part II). To pass the test, you must obtain 18/30 or more in both parts.

Contents

The theoretical section is dedicated to examining the main perspectives of International Political Economy, with particular attention to neo-mercantilism, liberalism and critical approaches. The empirical part, on the other hand, focuses on the analysis of the most relevant phenomena of the contemporary global economy, such as globalisation, international trade and foreign direct investment, the role of multinational companies, migration dynamics, climate change and economic inequalities.
