Overview

Date/time interval

Secondo Semestre (16/02/2026 - 29/05/2026)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

The module aims to provide students with knowledge of the fundamental methodological steps for the translation of specialised texts. Students will be able to identify the main translation problems in specialised texts and will acquire the most frequent textual, morphosyntactic and lexical strategies to adequately translate a technical-scientific text (with particular attention to the direction of translation from English into Italian). A broad discussion will be held on the use of AI and the advantages and limitations of Machine Translations (MT).

Course Prerequisites

The language level for admission to the Master's degree is indicated in the syllabus by the languages taught in the first year.

Teaching Methods

Lectures with the aid of PowerPoint slides and real texts accompanied by translation proposals analyzed in class. Students will be encouraged to participate actively, commenting orally on their translation proposals. Lectures by guest lecturers may contribute to deepening specific aspects of the programme.

Assessment Methods

At the end of the course there is a 60-minute written examination structured as follows:
-1 exercise with questions involving a true/false answer;
-2 exercise with 5 semi-structured questions
-3 commentary on a translation
The evaluation results from counting the correct answers out of 30.

Contents

The general characteristics of specialised communication will be examined, highlighting the macro- and micro-linguistic aspects of specialised languages. The concepts of translatability and equivalence in specialised communication will also be highlighted. The main strategies of specialised translation from English into Italian will be examined, with particular reference to textual, morphosyntactic and lexical procedures. These strategies will then be applied in translation activities involving group correction. Finally, the use of corpora in specialised translation will be introduced.
