Primo Semestre (23/09/2025 - 20/12/2025)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

At the end of the course the student is able to recognize the styles and forms of audiovisual language; analyse the technical-expressive aspects of cinema; to use the specific vocabulary of film studies; frame the evolution and functions of audiovisual language theoretically.

Course Prerequisites

Interest in film culture; willingness to watch and discuss classic and contemporary films.

Teaching Methods

The teaching is delivered through lectures that include the screening and the close analysis of film sequences. In addition to the exam bibliography, a mandatory filmography is made available by the instructor. The instructor provides teaching materials and exercises for each learning object in the e-learning platforms on a weekly basis.

Students will be invited to take part in optional and not mandatory extra-curricular activities consistent with the educational path (participation in juries of film festivals; accreditation to film festivals; participation in film screenings held at the University).

Assessment Methods

The evaluation is assessed individually. The student must demonstrate a complete knowledge of the course contents, bibliography and filmography. The evaluation test consists of two parts:

1) a 30-questions multiple choice quiz (30’)

2) a written commentary to a film (60’)

The final grade is expressed out of 30 and is calculated as the average of the two partial grades. For the students taking the module in combination with an other module, the final grade consists of the average of the grades of the two single modules. The exams of the two modules must be taken in the same session or at least in two consecutive sessions.

Contents

The module offers a basic knowledge of language of cinema in its historical evolution and its theoretical and technological implications. The module deals with the aspects of mise-en-scène, shot composition, editing, sound, and narrative structures in cinema.
