Overview

Date/time interval

Primo Semestre (23/09/2025 - 20/12/2025)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

By the end of the course, the student is familiar with the foundations of the history of radio and television, with particular reference to the Italian scenario. They have the necessary tools to understand and analyze a television content by relating it to the historical, technological, industrial, and cultural context in which it was produced and distributed. They are capable of contextualizing the history and evolution of television languages within the broader framework of media and mass communication, both at the national and international levels.

Course Prerequisites

No prerequisites required.

Teaching Methods

The teaching methodology consists of frontal lectures that alternate between historical and theoretical insights and analysis of case studies. During the lectures, exemplary sequences of television programs are analyzed and discussed. Active participation and discussion in the classroom is encouraged.

Assessment Methods

The exam consists of a written test and is divided into two parts: the first part is a multiple-choice section (10 questions, 10 points), and the second part consists of open-ended questions (2 questions, 10+10 points). The grade is expressed on a scale of thirty (10+10+10=30). The following aspects are evaluated: a) Knowledge of the concepts and topics discussed in class and the required readings. b) The ability to apply analytical tools to analyze television content in a conscious and critical manner. c) The ability to navigate within the history of television languages and establish connections. d) The ability to summarize information and use appropriate language.

For students who have "Cinema and Television" in their study plan, the grade for "Television Forms and Languages" will be averaged with that of the module "Theory and Technique of Cinematic Language". The exam will be considered passed if the student obtains a score of 18 or higher in both modules.

Contents

The course explores the history of broadcasting, with a particular focus on television in Italy and internationally. It examines the connections between major television business models and the languages employed in programming. Through a historical lens, the course explores the fundamental differences between public service television and commercial television. It examines their schedule characteristics, individual programs, and specific genres, encompassing both "scripted" and "unscripted" content. A particular focus is placed, in the final part of the course, on the "scripted" macrogenre.
