Syllabus

Course Objectives

Objective of the course is to provide basic tools and deepen the fundamental concepts of public finance, that is, the field of political economy which aims at studying causes and effects of the public intervention in the economy. Starting from the welfare theory, the course aims at analyzing public intervention in the economy from the perspective of both efficiency and equity. The course is based on the theory as well as on the empirical analysis with a particular focus on the Italian context. Particular attention is devoted to the analysis of the economic effects of taxes. The knowledge acquired in the course will provide the students with the tools necessary to understand the role of public administration and its effects on the institutional, social, economic and local level.

Course Prerequisites

None, other than the prerequisites required by the course curriculum.

Teaching Methods

Teaching will take the form of lectures and will be strongly interactive. Students will be encouraged during the lectures to contribute with proposals for further investigation and debate.


Assessment Methods

The final exam will be written, 60 minutes long. The written exam will consist of some open questions and it will be marked out of thirty points. The procedure and content of the exam will be the same for both attending and non-attending students.
