Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims to provide students with a solid understanding of the fundamental principles of management, promoting the acquisition of basic management skills in the main functional areas of the company (organization, marketing, finance, operations). Through an integrated approach between theory and practice, the course aims to develop the ability to analyze complex business contexts, interpret managerial dynamics, and apply decision-making tools consistent with business strategies. Particular attention will be paid to the interaction between the different business functions and to the operational declination of theoretical concepts through cases, exercises, and simulations.

Teaching Methods

The course comprises lectures, independent work, and group assignments on the core concepts and real-life cases.

 

Students are required to:

 

- Attend at least 75% of the classes to participate actively in the workgroup and business testimonials, and to put into practice the knowledge acquired

 

- Participate actively in class case discussions and general discussions to develop the collective learning process

 

- Read papers in advance and contribute to the discussion on other students’ presentations;

 

- Write case study reports in groups and deliver them for reviews to activate the skills related to the topics


Assessment Methods

For attending students:


Group/individual assignments during the course (60% of course grade)


Final examination (40% of course grade, based on the course textbook and the other course readings)


 

For non-attending students:


Written exam with open-ended questions

-         Planning: The Management Environment; Managing Change and Innovation; Planning and Goal Setting

-         Organizing: Structuring and Designing Organizations; Roles and Responsibilities

-         Leading: Understanding Leadership; Motivating and Rewarding Employees; Internal communication

-         Controlling: Controlling Work and Organizational Processes

-         Ethics, corporate social responsibility and sustainability

-         Contemporary approaches: Digitalization and the impact of technologies on management; Introduction to innovation management; Principles of International Management

Because the course involves active participation, discussion, and dialogue, course attendance is not compulsory but highly recommended.

With the specific purpose of pursuing the educational objectives set by the TRANSET Program within the framework of the Department of Excellence 2023-2025, the course will involve specific educational and training activities on the topics of social, ecological, and technological transition.
