The course aims to introduce and analyse the concepts and tools in conflict resolution, as well as the ensuing state building processes, i.e. those processes of stabilisation, democratisation and institutional, economic and social reconstruction in post-conflict situations. At the end of the course, the student will have an understanding of the mechanisms, which regulate the processes of post-conflict institution building within the international system, and a mastery of multidisciplinary tools in contexts of crisis, disaster and humanitarian emergencies. Furthermore, the practices and policies of political and social reconstruction, that must be implemented to stabilize a country in a post-conflict situation, will be investigated, through a multidisciplinary approach.
Knowledge of the English language adequate for reading and understanding language texts. In addition, mastery of the basics of geography and contemporary history is required.
The course is based on lectures as well as in-class discussions on assigned readings. Before the start of the course, a list of required readings will be made available, drawn from the books indicated in the syllabus, which will serve as reference material for group presentations. This will also help students understand the material discussed and presented in the lectures. Therefore, students will be asked to work in groups to prepare a presentation on an assigned topic. Students must study the suggested textbooks in the sections indicated by the instructor. The slides presented in class will be made available.
The course consists of two closely interrelated parts. In the first part of the course, of a propaedeutic and general nature, in addition to an in-depth study of the history of international relations, a number of "conceptual terms" considered fundamental for a better understanding of the dynamics of conflict management and resolution will be presented. Among these will be analysed, also in their evolutionary aspects, the concepts of 'peace'; 'war/conflictuality' (including the new types of wars, so-called asymmetrical wars and the fight against terrorism); 'democracy; democracies; democratisation'; 'fragile/failed states'; international policy instruments for conflict resolution: peacekeeping, peacebuilding, peace-enforcing, and the concepts of 'state building/nation building'; post-conflict reconstruction. In the second part of the course, a number of case studies will be presented in seminar format, with the aim of analysing the vulnerabilities and criticalities of the policies implemented, while also identifying a number of good practices for successful state building and post-conflict reconstruction. In particular, some cases in the Middle East, Balkan regions and South Africa will be examined.
