Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims to provide the conceptual tools necessary for understanding and critically analyzing the social dynamics involved in the management and development of innovation in businesses within the context of the digital transition.
In particular, by the end of the course, students will have acquired the knowledge to
a) apply key sociological categories to analyze and interpret group behavior and organizational practices in the digital age.
b) a critical analysis of the most significant social processes taking place in contemporary society and businesses from a sociological perspective;
c) an understanding of the relationship between innovation and social change, and the main mechanisms driving social innovation;
d) an informed interpretation of the challenges associated with technological and social transformations and innovations.

Teaching Methods

The course is taught using methods designed to promote dialogue among participants and between participants and the instructor. The course includes lectures—some of which incorporate audiovisual aids—case studies, group work, testimonials, and in-depth explorations of specific topics.
The course utilizes the Moodle platform through the course channel, where lecture materials will be uploaded.

Assessment Methods

For students who opt for ongoing assessment, the following applies: 60% of the grade will be based on an oral exam; 40% will be based on project work to be carried out in small groups, the results of which must be presented to the class. The project work will consist of in-depth thematic studies, case studies, and critical film analyses, carried out by applying the conceptual categories introduced in class in order to critically examine innovation and the interactions between social and technological transitions in the digital age. Detailed instructions will be provided during the course. This activity must be completed before the end of the course.
For students who do not participate in the group activity, an oral exam will be administered during the exam session.
The oral exam will consist of open-ended and specific questions designed to assess the student’s understanding and knowledge of the texts. In addition, complex questions will be asked to assess the student’s ability to critically analyze situations using the conceptual tools learned during the course. The grade will be expressed on a scale of 30.
The evaluation criteria adopted are:
(a) the relevance of the answer to the question;
(b) the ability to summarize;
(c) the appropriateness of language use.
For excellence, the ability to make connections and the use of critical and strategic thinking will also be considered.

Contents

The course offers an analysis of the social implications of technological transition, with a focus on the mechanisms of innovation development within the dialectic between business and society, viewed through a sociological lens. The first part of the course introduces businesses as social actors and agents of social change and innovation in the context of technological transition.
To this end, the course will draw on fundamental concepts such as social norms and values, roles, identities, and social relationships; group dynamics and social networks; social differences and inequalities; social change; and the dynamics of innovation. The second part of the course contextualizes these concepts within the study of social innovation processes in organizations from the perspective of social transition (for example: diversity and inclusion, intergenerational dynamics, group dynamics) and technological transition (digitalization, artificial intelligence). This course will explore the following aspects:
- The cultural dimension of businesses
- Innovation as a social process
- Gender innovation and transformative dynamics in businesses
- Digitalization, new forms of work organization, and the right to disconnect
- Modernization, knowledge production, and artificial intelligence: potential and ethical and social challenges
- Studying society in the digital age: examples from the MEN4DEM project (Horizon Europe Grant Agreement No. 101177356)
