Sistemi di mapping presso il DiathesisLab dell’Università degli Studi di Bergamo: RifoMap e Rifo3d per la rigenerazione urbana

Emanuela Casti founded DiathesisLab in 2004 within CST-Centro Studi sul Territorio that she directs at the University of Bergamo. It is a laboratory of research and innovation specialised in spatial analysis based on mapping experiments. Taking advantage of theoretical reflections formalized by its founder, DiathesisLab creates a cartography aiming at abandoning topographic metrics (topos) and at proposing chorographic metrics (chora) in order to achieve political and social goals, such as collaborative local planning. Main research themes at the Lab concern urban regeneration as well as conservation, or territorial governance and mobility. In these contexts, Geographical Information Technologies are applied in order to collect and analyse data, as well as to build mappings in collaboration with local authorities or national and international research organizations. In this essay, we present two examples concerning RifoMap and Rifo3d mapping systems created within a research on brownfields and obsolete areas in Lombardy. What emerges is the possibility to consult both quantitative and qualitative deep data on abandoned or poorly used spaces in urban contexts, as an operational basis for activating urban regeneration.
