abstract:
In the early years of the twentieth century the Humanitarian Society of Milan created an articulated system of schools for emigrants. Rooted in the context of Milanese socialism, the initiative aimed to improve the professional qualification of seasonal workers heading for Central Europe. The courses were based mainly in the northern regions, with a flexible organization that responded to local needs. The training offer was enriched by a rich editorial production and refresher courses for teaching staff. Thanks to their experience, some officials of the Emigration Service of the Humanitarian Society found employment in similar initiatives undertaken by the Ministry of Education.
