abstract:
Understanding the artistic genius of Marc Chagall is possible, not only through the author's already investigated belonging to Jewish culture but also through the analysis of the influence that the Russian cultural tradition has exercised in his life and work. The diary Ma vie (Moja zhizn', in Russian) allows to combine the author's memories with the images of his paintings, but above all the to see all the nuances of Chagall's belonging to the Russian cultural tradition. The expressiveness of the artistic section and the autobiographical writing suggested the combination of the work of some traits to some icons, but especially to many lubki. The essay accompanies the reader in deepening concepts, elements of Russian culture that find full expression in the author's art.
