How to estimate the social costs of airport negative externalities

This chapter presents a review of the different approaches available in the literature to measure airport externalities at the local level, starting from the settings established by regulation and then presents the Grampella et al. method, based on aircraft certification standards. The regulation of airport negative externalities is important because it presents some standards and settings that can help identify parameters for the evaluation of airport social costs. The noise contours provide the number of people exposed to a specific threshold value for the onset of adverse health effects from noise exposure. The adopted method is taken from Grampella et al. and is based on aircraft certification standards. The method can be easily replicated to all airports, with the only requirement of having data on scheduled flights and their model, so that matching with certification standards is possible.
