Remarks on the graded forms with sub- in Latin

Chapter
Publication Date:
2005
abstract:
Apparently Latin is one of the very few languages, all belonging to the Indo-European family, where adjectives can be graded by adding a prefix: not only to express a superlative like in prae-clarus ‘very famous’, but also to express something conceptually very close to the comparison of minority: sub-niger means ‘less than black, black to a lesser degree’.
