abstract:
Between 452 and 482, in a frontier territory and in the midst of transformation
of the ancient Roman world, Severinus lived. His hagiographic Life- by his disciple Eugippus in 511 - concludes with along journey from late antique Austria to southern Italy, where Severinus' remains will be received. Elena Gritti's research is not limited to framing the text and the personality of the protagonist in a perspective of 'odeporic hagiography', but through iconographic and toponymic traces still visible today in the territory of the ancient province of Noricum, offers scholars new elements, due to a reasoned analysis on the significance of Late Antiquity in border areas of the Roman Empire and in the face of the work of charismatic individualities. The hagiographic text is appropriately contextualised in the history of the territory to grasp the evolution of the socio-political fabric local history.
