Un «quotidiano d'informazione» democristiano: il «Giornale del Mattino» di Ettore Bernabei (1951-1956)

The daily press of the DC has often been neglected by its contemporaries and by its own protagonists, but still continues to suffer the absence of specific historiographical insights. Trying to overcome this lack of attention, the essay deals with the case of the «Giornale del Mattino», namely the Florentine Christian Democrat newspaper directed by Ettore Bernabei from 1951 to 1956, who assumed the role of privileged interpreter not only of the municipal administration of the mayor of Florence Giorgio La Pira, but also of the national transition of the DC from the leadership of Alcide De Gasperi to that of Amintore Fanfani. The essay particularly retraces the editorial innovations that transformed the «Giornale del Mattino» from a party organ into a modern daily newspaper of popular information, which aimed to involve its readership by varying contents and simplifying
journalistic language.
