Sul concetto di specie. Un dibattito bolognese del XIV secolo attraverso una quaestio di Matteo da Gubbio

Matthew of Gubbio, master of the arts at Bologna in the early decades of the fourteenth century, debated on the nature of the concept of species. In a disputed question, which is preserved in two manuscripts (Vat.lat. 6768 and Pisa, Cath. 231, fr. 3), Matthew discusses the question as to whether a species is composite or simple and in doing so, he joins a debate which involved John of Jundun and other lecturers on Aristotle and Porphyry’s Isagoge. The article analyses the argument that Matthew displays in his disputed question, framing it within the context of the philosophical discourse in the first half of the fourteenth century. The article also offers a critical edition of the text on the basis of the two known manuscripts.
