This volume collects the introductions to the six volumes dedicated by the illustrious historian of Byzantine art Ernst Kitzinger, between the years 1992 and 2000, to the Mosaics of the Norman Period in Sicily. In the previous edition, the Introductions accompanied a complete photographic documentation of Sicilian mosaics, mostly carried out in the 1950s by the well-known anthropologist, photographer and writer Fosco Maraini.
Read now in continuity and with the help of graphs and a photographic selection, they constitute a detailed, complete guide to understanding the complex phenomenon of Sicilian mosaics. Paolo Cesaretti's essay clarifies the genesis and retraces the creation of the Corpus of Mosaics, illustrating some implications, on an artistic, cultural and human level, of the collaboration between the great scholar and the extraordinary photographer, both of whom were just starting out at the time.
