abstract:
The nonexistent knight, published in 1959 by Einaudi, presents readers with a fantasy-inspired story featuring Agilulf as the protagonist, a knight in King Arthur's army. Recalling the cycles of literature chivalry, Calvin recounts the adventures of a character without a body, caged in rigid beliefs that prevent him from entering into relationship with others, isolating him in a world of abstract ideas and rituals obsessive. In The Nonexistent Knight one senses, even more than in the other two fantastic novels, the effort to translate into images a philosophical reflection on contemporary man, staged through a kaleidoscope of diverse and complementary figures.
