Conceived as part of a trilogy that was also to include La speculazione edilizia and La giornata d'uno scrutatore, the short novel La nuvola di smog, written in the late 1950s, can be considered "the fruit of an extraordinary psychological-social sensibility", an "exceedingly responsive seismograph, capable of registering with punctuality surprising the premonitory signs of far-reaching change." (Milanini, 1991, p. LVI).
