Abstract:
The reflects on the social complexity implied in the use of the commons in early medieval Italy. The first
part of the paper consists of a historiographical survey on the commons and social complexity. In the second
part of the article, the author analyzes references commons in early medieval Italy, stressing the fundamental role of the State in regulating access to commons.
