In contemporary times, the short story form plays an ancillary role to the novel genre in the literary canon and publishing system, despite the fact that the short story constitutes a founding tradition of Italian literature and has been able to express, throughout the twentieth century and in the early part of the 2000s
works of extraordinary value. In an effort to restore a renewed centrality to one of the noblest sides of our literature, the papers in this volume - which come from the initiatives of SINAB,
International Short Fiction Seminar - investigate the works of some twentieth-century authors (Svevo, Banti, Ginzburg, Ortese, Calvino, Flaiano), defining a wide repertoire of readings, ideas and theories that allow to foster a scientifically timely discussion around the status of brevity, in the broad spectrum of its possible declinations.
