abstract:
The village of Valdivilla, a small hamlet of just a few hundred inhabitants in the hills of the eastern Alta Langa, the scene of a bloody partisan defeat that took place on February 24, 1945, can be considered to all intents and purposes the archetypal place of Beppe Fenoglio's fiction, the space that opens and closes his parable as a storyteller: in fact, it appears in the earliest phase of his story as a writer, in the first notebooks in which the partisan Heathcliff - this is his nom de guerre - transcribed the notes he took while militating in the ranks of the blue partisans, and it returns, seen from different perspectives, reassembled and rewritten, in the crucial junctures of his story as a storyteller, from La paga del sabato to Il partigiano Johnny, and finally in a fragment datable to the period before Fenoglio's death, accompanying his reflection on writing and war.
