Abstract:
Despite his early passing, Mario Segre deeply influenced academic research on the Hellenistic Mediterranean. Specifically, his studies on the Greek inscriptions from the Dodecanese helped the reconstruction of the Hellenistic history of Asia Minor and the Aegean Sea in the 3rd and 2nd centuries. This chapter explores Segre’s findings on the recovery of the
Piraeus by Olympiodorus of Athens, the war between Antigonus Gonatas and Antiochus I Soter, and Antiochus I’s so-called “elephant victory.” It also considers Segre’s remarks on the Seleucid princess Antiochis, queen of Cappadocia, published only after his death. By reviewing his contributions on the Antigonids and the Seleucids, this chapter sheds light on their impact on the history of the Greco-Roman Mediterranean.
