abstract:
Charles III ascended to the throne of the United Kingdom in 2022, after having long served as Prince of Wales. Over time, he has developed an original conception of the monarch’s role within a profoundly pluralistic society. In particular, he has shown a sustained interest in the issue of coexistence among religious and secular faiths, and in the significance of such belief systems for society as a whole. This study explores the origins and implications of these ideas, which now inform the King’s public engagement and lead him to reinterpret, in an inclusive manner, the role of “Defender of the Faith”, as well as to reshape the Monarchy’s public discourse.
The monograph offers scholars and researchers in Law and Religion an analysis of a model of relations between State, institutions and faith communities which, though unique and not directly transferable beyond the British context, nonetheless serves as a valuable and thought-provoking point of comparison for continental models of State secularism.
