abstract:
This paper uses linguistic research tools (R. Jakobson) to compare the Corpus Iuris Civilis promoted by Emperor Justinian with the Qur'an dictated to the prophet Muhammad. These are two foundational texts of human history, as books of authority within cultural and religious traditions that are only at first glance very different from each other. In reality, a close analysis that is not limited to chronological data (there are only a few decades between the two texts) highlights profound similarities but also some differences, which are essential to keep in mind in order to understand subsequent developments in history and thought.
