abstract:
This entry discusses the various meanings of work for individuals with disabilities. Work is seen as essential for human beings, providing a means for survival and empowerment. It is described as both productive and existential, building products for the company while also shaping the identity of the worker. For persons with disabilities, work offers economic independence and the ability to make choices, contributing to self-esteem and self-image. However, despite efforts to promote inclusion, persons with disabilities still face barriers to entering the workforce, such as discriminatory attitudes, lack of accessibility in transportation and workplace infrastructure, and inadequate training and support. Personal factors such as low self-esteem and fear of not being able to control behavior in the workplace also pose challenges. The entry highlights the importance of addressing these barriers through measures such as increased accessibility in the environment, training programs, and support systems. While progress has been made in recognizing the rights of persons with disabilities to work, there is still a long way to go in ensuring full inclusion and participation in the labor market.
