Abstract:
Traditionally, the transition from the Classical to the Hellenistic age, with the progressive end of political autonomy in favor of the great monarchies, has been associated, in Greek thought, with a decline in interest in the political-constitutional sphere, and therefore also in the legal sphere. These were gradually replaced, if anything, on the one hand by reflections on individual (rather than community) well-being, and on the other by reflections on "kingship," more in keeping with the changing historical circumstances. This is a thesis, moreover, supported in a famous work by Isaiah Berlin, who, in turn, draws on Hegel's thought. This thesis is not entirely correct, and Hellenistic political thought remains, I would say, a vast, largely unexplored land for scholars of Greek legal thought.
