abstract:
This contribute explores the integration of biodiversity as an ecological instrument to enhance the socio-natural ecosystem of the former Psychiatric Hospital of the Maddalena in Aversa. The objective is to clarify the role of ecological principles in urban regeneration, focusing on the transformative potential of the hospital complex as a community-oriented space.
Through a tripartite analytical framework structured around habitats, roles, and relationships, the study examines the interconnections between human and non-human components within the site. The findings highlight a distinctive ecological context, shaped by the perimeter wall that has historically functioned as a boundary condition. This enclosure has enabled the preservation of local flora and fauna, fostering the emergence of a micro-ecosystem upon which multiple stakeholders now converge, underscoring the need for collaborative ecological governance.
The proposed meta-project outlines strategies to enhance biodiversity through the implementation of green infrastructures, community gardens, and innovative ecological technologies, thereby promoting both environmental sustainability and social value within the local community.
In conclusion, the study emphasises the importance of acknowledging the dual nature of margins—both physical and social residues—advocating for practices that encourage community engagement and ecological awareness. The insights derived from this analysis suggest a paradigm shift in the way architects and planners can facilitate socio-natural reintegration, contributing to the development of more resilient and inclusive urban environments.
