abstract:
This chapter discusses deterritorialization as a major feature of contemporary society and as a key factor in the crisis of the human-environment relationship. Drawing on the concept of territorialization in human geography, it argues that current environmental, social, and cultural crises are intensified by the loss of territorial knowledge and by the spread of simplified and stereotyped representations of places. Through examples from Lombard prealpine and urban contexts, the chapter shows how geographical memory, landscape diversity, and local territorial intelligence have been weakened. It ultimately calls for a renewed culture of places, able to reconnect social action, environmental awareness, and the historical understanding of territories.
