abstract:
The "Vita sancti Iohannis Gualberti" written by Andrea of Strumi, a monk and abbot who lived in the 11th century, represents the basis of the hagiographic tradition on Giovanni Gualberto, founder of the Vallombrosan congregation. The transmission of the text occurred through two main manuscripts: one preserved in Florence (Archivio di Stato, Corporazioni religiose soppresse dal Governo francese, 260 n. 259; 12th century) and one in Bergamo (Archivio Storico Diocesano, Cap. 1067; 13th century), both incomplete and with gaps. The Vita of Andrea of Strumi, in addition to having influenced the subsequent biographies of Giovanni Gualberto, written by Attone of Pistoia and Gregorio of Passignano, was also used to structure liturgical offices in honor of Giovanni Gualberto, especially after his canonization in 1193 and the elevation of the relics in 1210. The Florentine manuscript and the Bergamo one show, in fact, traces of liturgical use, with indications for lectiones related to the celebrations of the saint. The contribution also explores the history of the manuscripts, their passage through various monasteries and the modifications they underwent over time. The role of figures such as Lattanzio Medolago, abbot of Astino, who may have contributed to integrating missing parts of the text, is also highlighted.
