abstract:
Numerous studies have mapped the territorial geographies of the Lombardy and Po Valley regions; of particular interest in this context is understanding the role of Monza and Brianza through the evolution of the network of relationships that has gradually taken shape, as reflected in the spatial patterns that characterize the various territorial configurations. This reflection is situated within the body of work that shapes the debate in urban studies, aimed at recognizing and interpreting the evolution of urban geographies (Brenner, Schmid 2014, 2015)—a body of work for which the Lombardy context serves as a laboratory of significant interest. Analysis at the regional scale provides the backdrop against which to interpret the settlement dynamics that have reconfigured the network of relationships in the city of Monza—understood as a space caught between the gravitational pull of the regional capital, the dense, seamless conurbation extending northward toward Milan, and a networked structure of relationships recognizable beyond the dense urban region. The experiences examined highlight, within the context of an overall maturation of graphic representation capabilities that has evolved over the decades (thanks in part to the progressive advancement of technical possibilities offered by computer technology), how the quality and density of the representations reflect a perspective—understandably always intentional and varying in depth—aimed at capturing the specific characteristics of the landscapes in the various contexts analyzed.
