Course Objectives

PART 1: "GAME THEORY"
Game Theory is the science of mathematical models of strategic interaction.
The aim of the course is to enable students to understand and apply the main models of Game Theory, particularly in economic and social contexts.

PART 2: "DECISION THEORY"
Decision Theory is the science of mathematical models of decision-making processes.
The aim of the course is to enable students to understand and apply the main models for a single decision maker, particularly in economic and financial contexts.

Teaching Methods

Lectures and exercise sessions will be structured so as to develop students’ critical thinking skills.

In the presentation of strategic interaction models, particular attention will be paid to aspects related to the ongoing social transition, such as inclusion, equity and cooperation in decision-making processes.

Seminars with Emeritus Professor Gianfranco Gambarelli and other experts are planned; assignments related to the topics covered in the course may also be included as part of the teaching activities.

Assessment Methods

The examination consists of a written test followed by an oral examination.

The written test (indicative duration: 2 hours) consists of exercises (open-ended and/or closed-ended) on topics covered in both parts of the course (Game Theory and Decision Theory).

The score assigned to each exercise depends on the complexity of the question.

The written test may also be computer-based.

Candidates are admitted to the oral examination with a grade in the written test normally not lower than 18/30.

The oral examination is optional for students who have obtained a grade in the written test not lower than 26/30.

In all cases, the lecturer reserves the right to require an additional oral interview, where this is deemed necessary to verify the actual acquisition of the knowledge and skills set out in the educational goals of the course and to ensure the correct attribution of the final grade.

The oral examination consists of an in-depth discussion of the topics for which the written test has shown imperfect knowledge and of questions relating to the entire course programme.

The final grade will also take into account any optional assignments, whose procedures and assessment criteria will be communicated to students with adequate notice.

The oral examination must be taken at the same exam sitting as the written test.

PART 2: "DECISION THEORY"
- Decision making under certainty
- Decision making under uncertainty
- Decision making under risk
- Utility theory
- Advanced decision-making models (introductory overview).

More information

The materials used during lectures (slides, exercises, papers) will be published on the course e-learning platform.

In addition to the degree programmes of the Department of Management, this course may be included in the study plans of students enrolled in other degree programmes of the University, in the cases provided for by the respective academic regulations.
