Overview

Date/time interval

Primo Semestre (14/09/2026 - 19/12/2026)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

The student will be familiar with the laws governing the motion of fluids in an incompressible regime. In particular, at the end of the course it will acquire the ability to apply these laws, in their different forms, to solve basic engineering problems characteristic of fluid dynamics.

Course Prerequisites

Knowledge of mathematical analysis and physics.

For students enrolled starting from the 2025/2026 academic year, inclusive, to take the exam, students must have already passed the Analisi matematica e geometria exam.

Teaching Methods

Teaching will take place through lectures (32 hours) during which, in addition to theoretical notions, attention will also be paid to the physical aspects of the topics covered. These lectures will be complemented by 16 hours of practical exercises where fluid dynamic problems of engineering interest will be critically analysed and solved. Teaching materials will be provided on the moodle platform

Assessment Methods

This syllabus refers to the Mechanics of Fluids module. The overall examination of the course is divided into two modules: Mechanics of Solids and Mechanics of Fluids. Each module has its own evaluation method and its own grade. To pass the overall examination, students must individually pass both modules. The final grade of the course will be the arithmetic mean of the marks obtained in the two modules.

The examination of the Mechanics of Fluids module consists of a written test lasting 150 minutes and a possible oral test.
The written test is compulsory and it is considered passed only if a mark of 16 or higher is obtained. For students who pass the written test with a mark less than or equal to 19, the oral test is also compulsory. For students who pass the written test with a mark above 19, the oral test is optional.
The written test consists of three practical problems and one theoretical question. The mark for each of the four questions is 7 or 8 points, depending on the difficulty. The assessment takes into account the clarity of the solution, the methodological rigour of the procedure followed, and the correctness of the results.
The results of the written test are usually published on the Moodle page of the course for the current academic year.
The oral examination covers the knowledge acquired during the course, also taking into account any gaps observed in the written test. The oral examination takes place, typically, within one week from the date of the written test.
It is not possible to take the oral test in a different examination call from the one in which the written test was taken.

The instructor reserves the right to require an additional oral examination, including after the written examination has taken place and regardless of the score obtained, where this is deemed necessary to verify the student’s actual acquisition of the knowledge and skills specified in the course learning objectives and to ensure the appropriate assignment of the final grade
