Syllabus

Course Objectives

The module supplies the students the critical-methodological fundamentals to understand that cartography, as a part of Geomatics, is the science of surveying. In particular cartography, either traditional or digital provides a qualitative and quantitative representation of the reality that surrounds us.
By means of the course the student gets a deep knowledge of the theoretical, scientific and methodological fundamentals of the traditional and digital cartography starting from the knowledge of the representation surfaces of the physical terrestrial surface. This knowledge is the basis to develop cartographic skills indispensable for each territorial multi-scale project,for representing the evolution of natural or antrophic ecosystems with a view to greater sustainability. The use of the softwares that include the principal components of the environment with its spatio-temporal variations, allows the relevant applications characterizing several contexts not only within the geography, the urban planning, cartogaphy, but other disciplines as well related to them.

Course Prerequisites

No pre-requisites are required; however to guarantee that the students can achieve the training objectives of the Master degree, independently from the different previous training, the partecipation to the " alignment paths" related to the analysis and land representation and to urban planning tools is strongly recommended.

Teaching Methods

The teaching will consist of traditional lessons (22 hours), with particular emphasis an a interactive debate comparison and to the dialogue with the students which will be allowed to advance proposals on the contents of the lessons supported by visual tools (power-point) to facilitate the learning. The remaining 14 hours will be carried out inside the project work based on the active partecipation of the students. The project work, indeed, envisages unitary education approach embracing theoretical training and applied research on the field.

Assessment Methods

The exam test is oral. In particular the exam verifies:
the theoretical knowledge of the cartography;
the critical capacity of the student to apply theoretical results to specific real cases.
Finally it will be evaluated the portfolio realized by the students during the project work, formed by the set of project elaborated either individually or collectively, to evaluate the progressive maturity of the student and his operative capacity acquired during the formative process. The score, expressed in percentage thirty with respect to thirty marks, will be communicated to the student and signed in the electronic booklet.

Contents

The course, by means of front-end lessons and the project work, allows the students of Master Science in GeoUrbanistics to approach the fundamentals of the traditional cartography and the technical basis of the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) currently used in the modern digital cartography. The contents of the course are: the terrestrial physical surface and its representations: the geoid and the rotational ellipsoid. Cartography: fundamental concepts, elements map, classification of the maps as function of the reduction factor, cartographic projection, deformation modules, aims of the realization and applications. Reference frames and coordinates systems. Transformation of reference frames. Italian Official Cartography. Regional Technical Chart. Conform maps. Cadastral cartography. Description of several maps. Lecture of maps and particularly of IGM tablets. Digitalized maps. Digital mapping. Geographical Information Systems: definition, functionality and GIS segments: spatial, semantic, topological and statistic components. Geographical data of a GIS: Geo-referencing. Topology of GIS. Exercises of topology of GIS. Future of GIS. Applications of GIS to urban environments as support to decision making methods. Spatio-temporal GIS. Study-cases and international seminars. Specifically, during the 2022–2023 academic year, the course was co-taught with a professor from UCL, who taught 10 hours; furthermore, the course was included in the Winter School program organized by the degree program.
