Un erudito bresciano del Settecento: Giammaria Mazzuchelli. Atti del Convegno di studi, Brescia, Ateneo di Brescia, 22 maggio 2009

Giammaria Mazzucchelli (Brescia, 1707-1765) is known especially for the formidable biographical dictionary “Gli Scrittori d’Italia” (Brescia, Bossini Giambattista, 1753-1763), already greatly appreciated by modern scholars, older and younger: Apostolo Zeno and Girolamo Tiraboschi for exemple, and up to Carlo Dionisotti. We also recall that Benedetto Croce himself called “Scrittori d’Italia”, with an explicit reference to the “mazzuchelliana”, the series founded in 1910 and published by Laterza. The work of Giammaria Mazzuchelli is a dictionary of literature in alphabetical order. The work is unfinished: only the first six volumes were published. A large amount of manuscript material is still unpublished, as well as Mazzuchelli’s worldwide correspondence and several autobiographies, wich many writers of XVIII century personally sent to Mazzuchelli. The conference held in Brescia in 2009 brought together some of the best scholars and aims to inaugurate the ambitious project to publish the unpublished material of Giammaria Mazzuchelli.
