Course Objectives

The course aims to provide an overview of notions, references, and approaches for managing plurilingual and multicultural classrooms, with the aim of enabling students to:

· deconstruct stereotypes and prejudices regarding linguistic issues;

· recognize and counteract phenomena of linguistic exclusion, both at school and in the society;

· design and implement educational strategies for linguistic inclusion in the classroom and at school.

The educational goals include the acquisition of:

· disciplinary knowledges on the Italian linguistic repertoire and its evolution and variety;

· abilities in inclusive language awareness activities for pre-shool and primary school pupils;

· skills to select and properly adapt teaching materials for inclusive Language education.

Course Prerequisites

Fundamental tenets of Educational Linguistics, as presented in the “Introduction to Italian Linguistics” course.

Teaching Methods

· Frontal lectures with particular attention to comparison and direct dialogue with students.

· Individual and cooperative work in class.

Assessment Methods

  • Written exam on the topics covered in class
  • Presentation in class (for attending students) or extra question in the written test (for non-attending students) on a topic chosen from those covered during the course

A positive evaluation ranges from 18/30 to 30 (evt. “cum laude”)/30.

Contents

The course aims to introduce the most relevant themes for linguistic inclusion in the school context, addressing them both theoretically and practically. The focus will be on plurilingual and intercultural education, explored through a multidisciplinary lens including linguistic, neurocognitive, cultural, sociolinguistic, and didactic topics, all within a reflection on the Italian and European demographic and regulatory context.

The course will be divided into three main sections: in the first part (linguistic), the themes of bilingualism, code-switching phenomena, translanguaging, the development of interlanguage and Italian L2 teaching, and the concepts of linguistic erosion and native speaker will be critically explored. In the second part (sociocultural), topics such as linguistic mediation, managing intercultural encounters, linguistic landscape and schoolscape, and family language policies will be discussed. Finally, in the third part (educational), didactic strategies for plurilingual education will be examined through an overview of pluralistic approaches to languages and cultures and a deep dive into the translanguaging pedagogy.
