Course Objectives

The course provides economic analysis tools for the study of energy markets. The student will understand the functioning of specific markets and the role of economic policies (liberalisation, regulation and other measures such as taxation and incentives, e.g. for renewable energy) within these markets. The tools provided and topics covered also aim to enable students to understand the economic implications of energy dependency and energy transition, as well as their geopolitical repercussions.

Course Prerequisites

None in particular. The first part of the course introduces some basic topics in microeconomics.

Teaching Methods

Lectures with opportunities for discussion and dialogue with students.

Numerical exercises are also included in the course. There will also be opportunities for interaction during both lectures and exercise sessions.

Assessment Methods

Written examination. The test, lasting approximately 90 minutes, will consist of numerical questions and exercises.

It will also be possible to accumulate some bonuses during the interactive activities in the lecture and/or exercise sessions.

Contents

The course starts with some key concepts of microeconomics and industrial economics. Then it shifts the focus to the relationship between the economy, energy and the environment. In particular, it examines the economic mechanisms behind environmental policy instruments. The focus then shifts to liberalisation and the electricity and gas sectors. Another important topic is energy sources, their different characteristics and costs. The course concludes with energy strategies.
