Course Objectives

The main objective of the course is to furnish the basic elements useful to understand the geographic reality in its complexity, not only from a mnemonic point of view but also in the existential and identity senses. The sense of community, at the different scales, has always a geographical origin, that will be studied during the course, useful for the future of the students as professionals.

The main characters of the globalization will be studied, also considering the changes that this process gives to the local and urban scales, the effects on the “sense of the place” of each individual, the different consideration of the social contexts and the local and national effects.

Course Prerequisites

No particular prerequisite is required.

Teaching Methods

Frontal lessons

Assessment Methods

Two intermediate exams will be held by the attending students. For the not-attending ones, the exam will be oral.

Contents

The course will focus the attention on the key-concepts of geography and of the urban geography, such as the sense of place, the territory and space, the local identity, both individual and collective, and of its most intrinsic geographical significance. These concepts will be interfaced with the globalization one, with the looseness of the “sense of place” and of the individual identity, with the old and new forms of geographical identity and with the modes in which these enter in contact with the globalization process and its political and economic-geographical forms.
