Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course provides a basic comprehension of the role of technological change in the economic and managerial disciplines. In particular, at the end of the course the student will be able to understand the implication of technological change with the aim to: (1) analyze innovation processes and identify the involved actors; (2) interpret the evolution of markets and economic sectors; (3) foster business development and analyze firm innovation strategies.

Course Prerequisites

None

Teaching Methods

Lectures with special attention to direct dialogue and interaction with students.

Possibility of guest lectures by experts from the innovation ecosystem.

Application of learned concepts through a group Project Work.


Assessment Methods

Final written exam of 1 hour, divided into three sections of 10 points each (exercises, case studies, and open questions).

Possibility to earn up to 3 additional points for a Project Work agreed with the instructor.


Contents

The course is divided into three parts:

1. Fundamentals of Innovation: Introduction to conceptual tools for understanding key phenomena of technological change.

2. Economics of Innovation: Study of technological change within economic systems, industrial sectors, and markets.

3. Technological Change in Companies: Analysis of the link between innovation, competitive advantage, and company strategy, including intellectual property issues.
