Syllabus

Course Objectives

This course of Statics and Fundamentals of Structural Mechanics aims to provide the student with the necessary knowledge to undertake the analysis of the static response of structures subjected to known actions. First, we consider the concepts of force, couple, moment of a force, load and systems of forces. The study of Kinematics is then introduced for the rigid body model, for articulated systems and for structural analysis. Statics is then discussed, according to the laws of classical Mechanics, aimed therefore at the structural analysis of statically determined structures (in particular, isostatic trusses and isostatic frames) and, in introductory form, of statically indeterminate structures. We then discuss the mechanical behaviour of the materials and the analysis of the stress state according to the beam model for different cases of known actions.


Course Prerequisites

Mathematical analysis and Geometry.


Teaching Methods

Lectures (theory and exercise classes), homework.


Assessment Methods

Written and oral exam.


Contents

1) Review of vector calculus. Definition and examples of force, couple, moment of a force, load, systems of forces.

2) Kinematics: kinematics of the rigid body, kinematics of articulated systems, structural kinematic analysis.

3) Statics: laws of classical Mechanics, statics in structural analysis (constraint reactions, internal actions). Static analysis of statically determinate trusses and isostatic frames. Introduction to methods for analysis of displacement components and resolution for statically indeterminate structures.

4) Mechanical behaviour of materials. Stress state solutions according to the beam model for axial, bending and shear action cases.
