Support the design of the production cycle, namely - process selection (concept design); - design of equipment, tools and fixtures (detailing); - evaluation of process preformance (output, mfg accuracy, costs)
Course Prerequisites
No compulsory requrements. However, to take advantage from this course, each student should master: - mechanical drawing (esp. orthogonal...) - mathematics; - phisics; - chemistry.
Teaching Methods
Classes and (a few) numerical laboratories.
Assessment Methods
Written desing test and orla test.
Contents
- Introduction: production, material properties. - Foundry: solidification, sand casting and other casting processes. - Metal Forming: rolling, drawing, extrusion, forging, sheet metal forming (overview); - Machining: phisics of metalcutting, tool geometry, machine tools, parameter selection and design (roughness, forces, tool life, cost). - Machining processes: turning, drilling, milling, grinding (overview). (presently not included in this course: nonconventional machining and polymer processing).
Course material: - course slides (PDF) - M.Santochi, F.Giusti, Tecnologia Meccanica e Studi di Fabbricazione. - A.Bugini et al., Tecnologia Meccanica, 2 volumi (very good, out of print, available in the library). - S. Kalpakjian, S.Schmid, Tecnologia Meccanica (also in English, good description of processes).
