Overview

Date/time interval

Primo Semestre (23/09/2025 - 20/12/2025)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

At the end of the module, students have acquired the basic skills to analyse the relationship between media and gender in contemporary societies. Primary learning objectives include in-depth knowledge of the main theoretical-analytical perspectives used in the field of media and gender studies and the ability to use them by applying them to concrete cases.

In particular, students will acquire the basic skills for a critical analysis of the cultural implications of the relationship between gender and media and for the production of non-stereotypical narratives in a plurality of media forms and environments

Course Prerequisites

Basic sociological and/or anthropological knowledge.

Teaching Methods

Teaching includes a combination of lectures and practical-application activities to foster learning (in particular: learning by doing, debate). Students will be particularly encouraged in the production of media content.

Assessment Methods

Assessment is based on a written exam and takes place in two parts over the course of one hour and 45 minutes.

The first part, lasting 45 minutes, includes three open questions focusing on the definition of concepts and theoretical-analytical perspectives. The objective of this part of the exam is to test students’ knowledge, and the assessment criteria include: the completeness and relevance of the answers, language property, grammatical and syntactic correctness, and clarity. Each answer will be scored in 10/10, the sum of the scores, expressed in thirtieths, will constitute the grade obtained in the first part of the examination, which counts for 50% of the overall grade. At the end of the first part, the teacher collects the papers and starts the second part of the examination. The second part, lasting 60 minutes, consists of two open questions. Each question presents a case study (e.g. a newspaper article, a case defined by the lecturer, an image, etc.) and an indication of which of the analytical concepts or theoretical approaches addressed during the course should be used to analyse it. Textbooks may be used in this second phase. The aim of this part of the examination is to test skills in the critical analysis of cultural processes. Assessment criteria include the ability to apply analytical concepts and theoretical approaches to the analysis of concrete cases, the completeness and relevance of the answers, the clarity of the argumentation, language property, the ability to synthesise and critically analyse the cases, grammatical and syntactical correctness, and the richness of the exposition. Each answer will be marked in thirtieths. The average of the marks in the two answers, expressed in thirtieths, will constitute the mark obtained in the second part of the examination, which counts for 50% of the overall mark.

The overall mark is the average of the marks obtained in the two parts of the examination.

For students who have the Sociology of Culture and Media and Gender integrated teaching in their syllabus and who have not taken the in-progress examination for Sociology of Culture (or who reject the grade), the two modules must be taken on the same day. The final mark is given by the average of the marks of the two tests and will be published in the students' digital portfolio.

Contents

The module introduces the study of the relationship between media and gender through the presentation of the main theoretical-analytical approaches and research that have structured this field of study. In particular, the course is organised in four parts: a reconstruction in a historical and synthetic key of the field of study; the analysis of the representation and construction of a gendered imaginary – through reference to different media contexts (e.g. seriality, advertising, music, news, magazines); the analysis of the relationship between media, gender and dynamics of interaction, from an intersectional perspective – in particular through reference to digital media (e.g. dating apps; tradwives & Orthobros); the analysis of the field of media production and the dynamics of transformation of the field.
