Syllabus

Course Objectives

The module presents the main protocols and architectures used for the streaming of multimedia information over the Internet. Firstly, multimedia transport protocols for voice and video streaming are described as well as the mechanisms for guaranteeing the required Quality of Service, Content Delivery Networks and the current evolutions of the Internet (ICN, Information Centric Networks, SDN, Software Defined Networking). Finally, the course discusses the convergence between multimedia services and wireless access networks.


Course Prerequisites

There are no formal requirements. It is assumed that the student has basic knowledge of communication networks and the Internet.


Teaching Methods

Lectures presenting the concepts and the resolution of exercises.

 

If the course is taught in a mixed mode or remotely, changes could be made compared to what is stated in the syllabus to make the course and exams adapted also to these ways.


Assessment Methods

 Written test and oral with exercises and questions on theory.


Contents

Introduction to multimedia services. Networking topics: IPv4, IPv6, Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS), NAT, Multicast, Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP). Application level, DNS. Techniques for the effective dissemination of multimedia content: paradigm and functioning of Content Delivery Networks (CDN). Evolution of the Internet for the dissemination of multimedia contents (Information Centric Networks, ICN) and Software Defined Networking (SDN). Quality management of multimedia services. Convergence of wireless and multimedia networks. Introduction to Wireless LANs, Mesh networks (physical layer, data link and routing). Efficient spectrum management. Quality management of the service, Security.
