Syllabus

Course Objectives

At the end of the course the student is able to recognize the eras, the styles, the fundamental authors, and the genres of cinema; to recognize the relationship between the eras of the history of cinema and the historical-cultural context; to describe the forms and genres of film production critically and recognize their artistic, cultural and social relevance.


Course Prerequisites

Interest in film culture; willingness to watch and discuss classic and contemporary films.


Teaching Methods

Contents are delivered through lectures that include the screening and the analysis of exemplary films. The student actively participates through comments and analysis encouraged by the teacher. In addition to the exam bibliography, a mandatory filmography is made available by the instructor. The instructor provides teaching materials in the e-learning platforms on a weekly basis.


Students will be invited to take part in optional and not mandatory extra-curricular activities consistent with the educational path (participation in juries of film festivals; accreditation to film festivals; participation in film screenings held at the University).


Assessment Methods

The evaluation is assessed individually at the end of the module. The student must demonstrate a complete knowledge of the course contents, bibliography and filmography. The evaluation test consists in three open-ended questions, one of which is related to filmography.


For the students taking the module in combination with an other module, the final grade consists of the average of the grades of the two single modules. The exams of the two modules must be taken in the same session or at least in two consecutive sessions.


Contents

The module offers a basic knowledge of the history ​​of cinema. The module traces the evolution of the history of cinema from its origins to the present day: the archaeology of cinema and the invention of the cinematograph; the cinema of attractions; European cinema of the 1920s; classic Hollywood cinema; the introduction of sound; the birth of the studio system and genres; Neorealism; the Nouvelle Vague; modern Italian cinema; the New Hollywood; the Third Hollywood; post-modern cinema; and contemporary cinema.

More information

The official channel of communication between the instructor and the students is the university e-leaning platform. It is mandatory to check the e-learning platform on a weekly basis. The e-learning platform includes didactic materials and further recommended films and readings.


The exam program is the same for both attending and non-attending students. Erasmus and PDP or PEI students are invited to get in contact with the instructor at the beginning of the course.
