Syllabus

Course Objectives

Knowledge of the classics of Italian literature based on the direct reading of texts and the study of the cultural context of reference.


By the end of the course the student will have acquired essential knowledge of Italian literature of the modern age and in particular of forms and modes of self-writing in the Italian tradition, in parallel with European models.


He/she will have acquired the following skills: analysing and contextualising prose texts, recognising the autobiographical purpose and style of a text, interpreting a text by recognising its cultural value, analysing issues related to the major periods of Italian literature and history.



Course Prerequisites

Fluency in Italian language.


Teaching Methods

Lectures, workshops, seminars.


Assessment Methods

Written test to verify:

1) knowledge of course contents;

2)contextualization and interpretation skills; 3) writing and discussing skills on course contents;

3) writing and discussing skills on theoretical and methodological points.

The exam is structured as follows:

4 open questions of the following kind:

1) identification, literal comprehension and commentary of a text;

2) commentary to critical views of scholars;

3) general question on a problem, a work, one or more characters;

4) summary of essays or part of essays in programme;

5) comparison of texts or passagese.

Duration: 4 hours.

Evaluation (out of 30 points): 16 points, 4 for each question. The points are counted starting from 14/30, therefore 18/30 will be attained with 4 points.

Detail of evaluation, for each questione:

0 points: no answer, answer off topic, erroneous contents, no identification of proposed text;

1 point: basic knowledge, writing with syntactic, lexical or ortographic difficulties;

2 points: average or partial knowledge, weak analytical approach, average correct writing;

3 points: good knowledge of contents, analytical approach, correct writing;

4 points: very good knowledge of contents, analytical and critical approach, precision in details, correct and elegant writing, with knowledge of technical language;

4+ points (full marks and honour): excellent knowledge of contents, excellent critical approach, knowledge of details, reference to personal or optional readings, correct and elegant writing, with knowledge of technical language.


Contents

Writing about oneself: forms and modes of autobiography.


This course will focus on the writing of the self in the long process of the construction of modern autobiography. The forms and modes of self-writing will be analysed through the various epochs of Italian literature, but with parallel attention to European literature (in particular Rousseau). Particular attention will be given to Vittorio Alfieri's “Vita scritta da esso” and to the books that mark turning points in the history of self-writing in Italian literature.

Additional texts and critical support will be made available on the Moodle platform. Non-attending students can write to the professor to obtain the Moodle access code.


ATTENDANCE IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED.


For NOT ATTENDING students, additional readings are provided in a specific section on the Leganto platform. The Professor is available for individual talks for clarification of the programme, the method of study and additional recommended readings. Erasmus students in particular are recommended to meet the professor during reception hours.
