Syllabus

Course Objectives

In line with the learning objectives of the Degree Programme, students will develop their communicative, expressive and argumentative skills in English at C1 level (Effective Proficiency) of the Common European Framework. At the same time, on a metalinguistic and critical level, they will acquire the tools to analyse discourse from a cross-cultural perspective, with particular attention to conceptual metaphors, narratives, and identity constructions.

Course Prerequisites

B2 (Vantage) level in English of the Common European Framework.

Teaching Methods

The course will be based on lectures. Students will be encouraged to actively participate in the discussion of the topics presented in class.

Students are strongly advised to attend both the activities planned by cla for their level of competence (AAL class) and any tutoring activities on offer throughout the year; more details are available at https://www.unibg.it/studia-noi/ti-aiutiamo/apprendimento-linguistico/inglese/inglese-llcs

Assessment Methods

This exam can be taken only by students who have earned 9 credits for their second-year English language exam. The exam will be a discussion (in English) of the course topics: at least three questions will be asked. Assessment will be based both on linguistic competence and on knowledge of course contents. Prior to the oral exam students will have to pass a computerized test (lasting approximately 90 minutes) in which listening, reading and translation skills, together with lexical and morpho-syntactic competence, are assessed; an example is available in the e-learning pages; the pass mark is set at 60/100. The oral exam must be taken within 18 months after passing the written test. The result of the computerized test will be published a few days (1-2) after the date of test. Students who have already acquired relevant EFL certificates do not have to take the computerized test, but will have to show the document issued by the Student office in which the certificate is recognized - see https://dllcs.unibg.it/it/studiare/corsi-studio/certificazioni-linguistiche In addition to contents, the evaluation of the oral exam will also take into account the candidate’s linguistic competence as far as lexis, grammar, phonology and pragmatics are concerned

Contents

The course aims to introduce the main theoretical and methodological approaches to discourse analysis, applied to the comparison between British and American contexts. Special focus will be placed on conceptual metaphors, narratives, and the ways in which language contributes to constructing national identities and cultural affiliations. The analysis and discussion of academic, journalistic, audiovisual, and multimodal texts from the UK and the US will enable students to develop critical skills in interpreting the dynamics of global communication from a cross-cultural perspective.
