Syllabus

Course Objectives

At the end of the course the student has acquired the basic knowledge on applied thermodynamics and transport phenomena. He/she has acquired the skill to solve basic engineering problems in the field of applied thermodynamics and heat transfer.

Course Prerequisites

Knowledge of the subjects of the courses Calculus (analisi matematica) I e II, Physics (Fisica generale) I e II, Chemistry (Chimica).

Teaching Methods

Teaching takes place through lectures and exercises. Additionally, intensive exam preparation in the form of a tutorial will be offered (if funded) that will take place, usually, at the end of the course in January and after each exam. The latter one is aimed to solve the previous exam together with interested students.

Assessment Methods

The exam consists of a written (lasting 2 hours) and a subsequent oral examination. The written part is mandatory and the oral one optional, except for some cases at the discretion of the teacher. Both examinations must be passed in the same exam session. Registration for the examinations with the telematic modalities provided by the University are mandatory and prerequisite for the registration of the final grade.
The written examination includes 2 problems each one with 5 questions. Students pass the exam only with a minimum grade of 18/30.
During the writing examination, the use of any communication device and forms is prohibited.

Contents

Thermodynamic systems. 1st law of thermodynamics. Intensive and extensive variables. State equations, specific heats. Properties of the ideal gas. Diagrams of state. Thermodynamic engines. Open systems. Gas and vapour cycles. Psychrometry. Heat conduction under stationary regime and variable regime (concentrated capacities). Heat transfer through convection. Heat exchangers.
