Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course has the objective to train students to understand, analyze and manage SCM issues from a strategic and managerial point of view. The main objective of the course is to provide knowledge and methods to analyze and interpret the dynamics of a modern supply chain able to create competitive advantages and specific market positioning.
Students will learn what is an innovative supply chain, what are the operations and the basic tools to manage a supply chain of companies operating in many industries.
At the end of the course students will be able to:
- Recognize the different supply chain models;
- Know the macro and micro processes involved in a supply chain;
- Review the activities, processes and systems related to the supply chain management;
- Apply techniques and tools typically used in supply chain management such as: demand forecasting, strategic warehouse management and transportations (also from a “make or buy” point of view), macro and micro SCM planning, reverse logistics processes, and finally a balance
scorecard for SCM.
- Work in teams.
The above mentioned abilities will be achieved through lectures, exercises, individual study and case studies discussions. The achievement of these skills will be assessed with a final written exam at the end of the course.

Teaching Methods

This course is based on a group-learning methodology, which requires cooperation among students and individual commitment.
During the course attendee students will engage into discussions with their peers and the instructors based on the contents of the course.
In addition, the attendee students will discuss several case studies. For these reasons the instructors will create working teams to facilitate interaction among students and to develop students’ ability to work in groups.
Finally, during the course students will have also the opportunity to attend interesting speeches of the most qualified SCM managers.

Assessment Methods

The final exam will be a written exam. The written exam consists of 20 multiple choice questions and 1 open-ended question regarding the theoretical and technical aspects of the discipline.


Contents

This course will introduce students to SCM issues. The course will offer a broad overview of a dynamic and integrated supply chain management,
not limited only to logistics, but integrating production and innovation management (product, service and process), SCM as a competitive leverage, the coordination between SC and other coporate operations, tools for measuring the performance of SCM.
In particular, we will address the following topics:
- The evolution of SCM from operational to strategic points of view;
- SCM main processes;
- Planning the three macro SCM processes: inbound, internal and outbound;
- Servitization in SCM;
- Reverse logistics;
- Outsourcing in SC: analysis of costs and benefits;
- Collaborative supply chain;
- SCM balance scorecard: SCOR (Supply Chain Operations Reference);
- The supply chain and logistics for the e-commerce;
- The role of logistics and supply chain in the corporate social responsibility;
- SCM in a global perspective.

More information

Course's attendance is suggested but is not compulsory. With the specific purpose of pursuing the educational objectives set by the TRANSET Program within the framework of the Department of Excellence 2023-2025, the course will involve specific educational and training activities on the topics of social, ecological, and technological transition.
