Overview

Date/time interval

Secondo Semestre (16/02/2026 - 29/05/2026)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

After passing the exam, the student should be able:

  • to identify the changes that digital technologies have triggered in educational and caring practices;
  • to discuss the fundamental topics related to the use of digital technologies in the field of education and caring;
  • to distinguish, in the scientific literature about the topic, contributions based on evidence and critical explorations from those based on momentary trends;
  • based on the knowledge acquired during the course, to develop critical analyses of current applications of digital technologies and social robots in education and caring.

Course Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of English.

Teaching Methods

In line with the educational objectives described above, the course will be organized in:

  • traditional lectures;
  • interactive lectures dedicated to the critical discussion of the topics covered;
  • lessons carried out through group work centered on the participatory analysis of some of the texts of reference;
  • group work that enables students to practically apply the content they have learnt in contexts consistent with their professional future.

Assessment Methods

The final examination will consist of an oral interview aimed at assessing the following:

For attending students:

  • The acquisition and personal re-elaboration of course content, including its relevance to their future professional practice;
  • The understanding and mastery of the required readings;

Attending students may also refer to the e-portfolio developed during the course, which will allow them to collect meaningful materials produced and monitor their learning process.

For non-attending students:

  • The understanding and mastery of the required readings;

Non-attending students must study not only the compulsory texts but also additional literature specifically indicated for those who do not attend classes.

Programme customisation is possible, particularly for students engaged in international mobility programmes. In order to discuss this option, students are required to schedule an appointment with Prof. Marco Giganti by contacting him in advance via email (marco.giganti@unibg.it).

Grades are expressed on a scale of thirty. The final mark will be based on the following evaluation criteria:

  • The robustness and organisation of acquired knowledge;
  • The ability to present course content clearly and with appropriate academic language;
  • The capacity for personal re-elaboration of concepts and competences, especially in relation to one's future professional development.

Should online assessment become necessary due to unforeseen circumstances, the exam procedures may be revised and updated accordingly.

Contents

The course presents a synthetic outline of the specific problems arising from the introduction of digital technologies and robotics in educational and care contexts, and proposes a critical reading of their use. The essential content of the course, in line with the objectives described above, is divided into three segments:

  1. a general introduction to the use of digital technologies in education and caregiving, with a focus on digital technologies and generative AI in education and training contexts;
  2. an in-depth investigation of different current applications of digital technologies, social robots and their theoretical groundings;
  3. a critical investigation of the potentialities and limits of these technologies for teaching and caring in the digital age.
